These are not stupid questions. Those who dunno how to answer them are usually ill-prepared or frog-in-a-well. This questions (hostile they may seem) actually helps the interviewee to sell themselves.
1) For the interviewee to sell his strengths, make a comparison with other canidates.
2) To see how the canidate react under pressure.
3) To see if this canidate have amibitions
4) To see if this canidate have any plans in the future
no wonder TS is still an umemployed kid...
Competition is too keen these days. One needs to do homework on how to deal with interview questions effectively.
its an employers world now. in recession were jobs are scarce and hard to come by, they can afford to pick from a lot of candidates.
if you are not selected, doesnt mean you are no good or anything. this always happens when the economy is bad. you just need to carry on applying and attending interviews.
Originally posted by Rooney9:its proven that these interviewers are untrained HR people asking generalist questions. there are techniques and set of questions asked to solicit genuine reply.
is this question is not meant to humiliate you, I dunno what is.
I saw that you have been working for many years and you are still an executive.
Questions of these nature are design to see how you would handle pressure. Assuming you lost ur cool, and walk out, this would reflect to the interviewer u cannot control yourself. They'll never hire u for jobs like customer assurance, corporate communications, public relations especially. In fact, this kind of "pressure" interview-styles are used in relatively higher responsibility jobs in my company.
What happens if a customer complain to you that your organisation is stupid, or gives degrading comments about you? Or a reporter probing u about a controvestial decision made by your company? You stand up and walk away?
Go think about it. While I agree there are silly interviewers, most of the time, the fool is the interviewee.
if like that, then next time I am an interviewer, I can ask questions like, how come you are still single, no man wants you eh. or you are too old for this job for a start, tell me why I should employ you.

This is getting personal and not professional, not advisable to ask such questions. Moreover you may portray bad image for the company.

I am sure there are interviewers who asked all sort of questions, silly, humiliating or otherwise? purpose? to test whether you can handle stress or not during the interview.

hmm.. i'll maybe laugh abit and ya, life cannot be fair to everyone, plus my passion lies in (the job I'm interviewing) and not (my ex-job). I've taken up (insert everything I did to improve myself geared towards this job).
Think the key here is not to show any hint of defensiveness, especially in facial expression and body language. Depending on the rapport I have with the interviewer/s, I may end with a question "What's the promotion structure here like?"

Haha. I suggest you google on "interview questions" or go to the link provided by a forumer earlier. We're giving you constructive answers so far. Hopefully, you dun push it too far.
I got asked this interviewer who is a director in the company. he said I am not suitable for this job after interviewing me for a while and I asked him if thats the case, why bother to ask me down for an interview, he said thats what interviews are for.
I suggest if you are not deemed suitable for the job, give polite reply say thank you for coming down and we will let you know if you are shortlisted. no need to offend or put down the interviewer lar.
Face to face allows better assessment
Why should I employ you?
Because I am a fast learner
What is your career objectives?
Just to have a stable job and have food to eat. I am not the ambitious type.
What do you see yourself in 5 years time?
Having a stable job
Why is your results so lousy?
Have to work part time during school so no time to study.
How is all these answers?
I was once told, the answer fast learner is not a good answer. Interviewer can rebuke that they have no time for the employer to learn, they must get on the job fast. But there again, I believe it depends on what level and what job the candidate is applying.

erm than say you are a fast learner who learns once only know how to do already?
Or say you are a fast person and you can do 2 or 3 person's job..

think the best is when you are attending interview, go gauge on the job scope and what sort of interviewer he or she is to decide what answer to give.

cos I have the relevant experience and know-how to be effective and efficient in this job. I am sure I am able to do a competent job if I am offered this position.
I hope to do this job well and stay on with the company and we grow together. if I do the job well, the sky is the limit.
I was not a good student then. I admitted I could have studied a tad harder for exams, but exams are not to be a be-all and end-all. alot of entrepreneurs are not degree educated such as creative tech sim wong woo and others like him.

what if you don't have the relevant experience? Than you can't say that..
The boss will shoot you back that he is not employing entrepreneurs so don't compare yourself with them or he can say than you should go and be entrepreneur instead of working..
haha thanks. so automator, sounded like you are looking for jobs?

say that you are willing to learn and learn as fast as you can. then dun mention entrepreneurs, just say the point you are trying to make is people with no degree did well in their careers.
then you can also shoot back say, if I want to be entrepreneur, I wouldnt be applying for this job eh.
To TS:
if the boss ask u what u see yourself
in five years?
u reply:

in the next five years..
He/She confirm will be very impressed
by ur great ambition!!

this could be so overuse that it sounds like a cliche.
Research the job position n have a rough idea of the promotion structure. Perhaps can say something like "I see myself leading a team in charge of this this this or that that that"
Worst come to worst, know the company/department's vision, say something according to the vision.

Wah too concise bo? Elaborate and also throw in a few more points like interpersonal skills, highly motivated and etc. Remember to cite examples.
What is your career objectives?
Just to have a stable job and have food to eat. I am not the ambitious type.
I mai kong too much. You just go think what would your prospective employer think if you were to provide replies of such quality.
What do you see yourself in 5 years time?
Having a stable job
A bit buang - I guess it depends on what position you're apply for and also where. I'd actually say something like "I hope to be in mid-management and starting to work on a mba; I'm passionate about this job (give reasons) and also in my academic pursuits."
Why is your results so lousy?
Have to work part time during school so no time to study.
One good point to note - Sell your strengths and hide your flaws. If you don't know how to sell yourself, even if you have a mba from insead... also can't help...
How is all these answers?
Failed. If I were your interviewer, I'd just show you to the door and wouldn't even tell you to wait for my call. Should put in more effort to prepare for an interview.
... Read my quote...
I was asked this question during an interview by a female director, who is about 50 plus.
Q: what do you speak at home?
A: mandarin with family.
Q: are you good in english?
Q: what hobbies do you have?
A: Swimming, reading, surfing web, movies and television.
Q: you are quite fair eh by your appearance
A: I go swimming usually in the evenings where the sun has set.
