Don't be surprise if you find many local IT graduates not or cannot be in this field
and don't be surpise if you find 90% of the local IT workforce are native Indians from India.
Think next year starting pay for fresh grads might drop below 2K.
Maybe 1.5K to 1.8K.

SMU fresh grads can make 4-10K.
Don't play play.
Squarepant..take up any job that comes your way. Build up yourself the experience and most importantly your reputation. If you want to earn more in the future, you must be able to do more than and excel in your job.
In today's market..it is those with the skillset and the correct attitude that commands the pay. I advice against marketing yourself too highly. Take the job that comes your way. Master your work and be at your best everyday. Eventually, you will be able to command the pay that you so desire.
I had learnt from my mentors that even when you are asked to do more, take it in your stride and use that as a leverage to learn more skillset. The worrisome thing is not that they do not give you more work but is to give you too little of which you will not be able to learn anything.

I notice some job agencies do not know much about the various industries they are supposed to be sourcing candidates for.
Most of these recruiters have never worked in say the engineering or IT or financial industry and they apparently match candidates via keywords in their resumes without really understanding the unique job scope of the position.
As such, you get a lot of chapalang candidates being introduced to the client but never a good fit.
You cant expect much from job agency. Those job agents are paid mostly based on commission and they have lots of success stories whereby an engineer went to work in an arts job and an arts person get a job in engineering. To them, anything is possible.
A job agency have called up for another job on Software engineer .. ok since i am a fresh grad .. i intend to set my expected 2k negotiable..
Tml i will go down with my transcripts and cert .. i'll see what is up in their sleeves now

Trouble is, part time or temp jobs are also hard to come by as you are fighting with workers from ALL levels, from people with little education, to fresh grads, to retrenched mid level managers and even director level managers.
As an employer of a $5 an hour job, which kind of worker will you want to hire?
That's the reality of the situation today.
