Shanghai feels like Singapore. Modern bustling city. No feeling of displacement whatsoever.
If your friend is working during the day you could just get recommendations of places to visit, directions on how to get there, and travel via public transport. It's safe and easy.
Within SH itself there's the few highlights like the Bund, their shopping district nan jing lu (hello DVDs!), and some museums.
You could travel to the outskirts and visit one of those "water villages" like zhou jia zhuang. They call themselves the Venice of the East.
Did you do some homework like checking out where to visit on the web?

They are. Pretty and polished compared to the girls from villages.
But I hear the good ones have already moved to Singapore.

There's a direct highway linking SH and beijing. Travel between takes about 2 -3 hours. Definitely make a trip to BJ while you're there. Leave early in the morning, cover the forbidden city etc. in Beijing, then go climb the great wall. All in a day's work!

ya, will make a trip to zhou jia zhuang.. heard it's beautiful.. if got time, maybe going to suzhou and hangzhou too... maybe later go get lonely planet lor.. handy book =)
