The thing is, it may very well be that we get the very thing we want in the end, but not all of us may like it. I might want very contradictory things so it seems... not want the doctor to operate on my infected leg but still expect to keep it without any treatment.
And I never supposed hell was about being barbequed for an eternity, it seems to me to be something far beyond in comprehension that any experience in our five senses can ever imagine... the things written in the bible are symbolic... because I suspect our language cannot describe hell.
First and formost why I said that in hell we may get our wish could be very well be found, that we have an existence that is competely devoid of the One that sustains it. We wanted to be free of this pesky, nosy God who makes demands of us an indeed now we have completed this divorce.
Of course we might have made such a choice without considering many other things, as in the very existence that we were given, every thing we have enjoyed and found good never really came from our own doing at all, and were never in our power to keep. I think the self is fufilled in hell, but it's anything but the existence we imagined it to be.
I do not think of it as punishment, but rather a pretty fair trade of things. If I don't want God I might do good to consider that everything I own and found good actually belongs to Him, and to reject Him may very well mean to reject everything else that really keeps us alive. It's a little like wanting to be free from air, but we can't blame air for the things that happens to us when we finally reject it.
Is such a God (if He exists) selfish in making hell a possibility? I suspect it's only a possibility because He is not selfish, and is reluctant to control us, limiting His actions to only a wooing of us. Allow us to ignore Him, mess up His work and yet keep our reality running.
There is of course more that I would like to say about this issue, but I would suggest we stop at these notions, to keep our talk focused.
