In my experience, my non christian relatives had problem because of their ignorance in Christian. We maintained good relationship by showing respect and they later actually gave me the opportunity to explain what the Bible says, and they accepted that. I'd be first to admit the some Christians have lots of issues about what cannot/can do.... from music, to movies, to food, to dressing, to entertainment.

The chicken, after reheat, serve during dinner, no problem.
Now we don't have any problem at all during gathering. I agree that in most cases, the people who take these as issues are the Christians.
Now for me the only food offered to ritual is the food laid out during Chinese Qing Min, once a year. The pau are often broken up and thrown on the grave, (no significance but to please my in law). Chicken is usually not chopped up yet. Not hygienic? jiao sak! the food during incamp are often worse. -
I dont see this as 'pantang' or not 'pantang'. It's obedience to God & it tells a lot about how you are willing to face persecution for God. There is no superstition involved. God said not to bow means not to bow. Why show respect to these false gods? Why do we want to please unbelievers? The church has slided down into men pleasers. My father never forced me to hold joss sticks but some Christians even frown when I bowed to show respect. These "pantang" Christians had not helped in making some non Christians understand Christianity better. In fact, non Christians see these "pantang" behavior no difference from other religious behaviors, e.g. Buddist don't eat beef, Muslims don't eat pork.
Thank God, my parents are Christians today, it is the grace of God, answering the prayers of Christians relatives and friends around them, through the work of the Holy Spirit that changed their life. It was not obvious that it was the behaviors of Christians in general, that had anything to do with that.

God said we shall have no other gods before us. By bowing, we treat the idol as having the power to dictate our behaviour. By bowing, we bow down to please others who dont believe.
Cannot pls unbelievers to preach gospel to them. How to please when Christ said people will not listen. If by being men pleasers we preach the gospel, then it's fake gospel. -
