I don't think it's that bad, why never talk about JC/Uni students that decide to go Poly or private insitutions, take up spots because of their better results, but with no experience/background/knowledge related to taken subject. Few years later in the line they study something else, or pursue something totally unrelated to what they've learnt.
There's a bigger percentage in that.

actually hor, tis is very obvious in engineering courses esp those top students.. end up study biz
thing is, I also realised late developers are also deprived a chance in uni as well

True. Alot of tertiary students I met have no aim, or goal whatsoever. Whether they develop early or late, it's never too late to learn. But to be honest, I've learnt nothing for the past 12 years. I always believed school was there to pique your interests in subjects, to help you improve as a kid, to mature as a teen/young adult.
But who am I kidding, it's Singapore's education system.
We need to go way back, when these kids are in primary and secondary schools. They need dreams, goals etc. Not being pounded by parents/MOE to produce top grades with the knowledge of the heavens, but the common sense of a mental patient.

Seriously ... when I was a student, I have no idea what I wanted to do too .. It was only when I came out to work then I realised I have an interest in this line, then I went on with it ..
Of coz, a lot of kids now study what their parents want them to .. like engineering or accounting or finance, in order to get a good paying job in the future..
Somewhat from someone I know in my neighbourhood, good poly grades way abv e cut off still deprived to study his dream course in uni cos of his past...
and it seems from him tat e correspondence w/ e uni over tis matter, it seems unforgiving to these people... and e ministry seems to keep their hands off this matter.
But at least he has at least 1 place in NTU for his home course

some for e glamour like biz.. but you see in recession like now, reality sinks in.. seems that engineering courses are getting popular this year

That's now mah, that's how it is now. Whatever happened to find out during these times to know at least, what you're headed into.
The transition period between primary to secondary, and then to tertiary, and thereafter to working life is really drastic.
I guess I was lucky, to know what I wanted, to know what I can do, and to have people show me the way.

Reality, during this times, is equivalent to having money. Which is the wrong motivation but it's also sadly a much needed material.
It shouldn't be the excuse for people to steal other people's chances, or do something they'll hate in the future, etc etc etc, whatever else there is.

people these days lack e passion to do things for themselves

Passion aside, is nothing if there is no interest in the first place. We're born to bury our heads in books, because we must. Here comes the role of the teacher. Hah.
No offence, if there are any teaching staff here, that most of them, are only there to collect paychecks at the end of the month.
maybe
as for tat kid tat I know tat I've mentioned just now... I can sense he has a passion for e thing he wants to do in future.. so hopefully he can use e only offer in uni to prove to the unis tat they're wrong over late developers
if he could focus and perserve to make up for his past in poly, why can't he in uni?

Good luck to him then.

but hearing from him, I'm just shame tat late developers oftenly have to be looked down at every stage of their life
but sometimes looking at another point, that's how they end up become stronger than others at every transition of their education path
