Electronics giant Apple on Monday (April 9) announced special red editions of its iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus mobile phones, in support of the fight against the spread of HIV and Aids.
The phones, in red finishes, will be available for order online in selected countires and regions from Tuesday. It will be available in stores from Friday (April 13).
The red edition of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus will be available in 64GB and 256GB models starting at a retail price of US$699 (S$917).
In a release on Monday, Apple said a portion of proceeds for all special edition red purchases go directly to Global Fund HIV/AIDS grants that provide testing, counseling, treatment and prevention programs with a specific focus on eliminating transmission of the virus from mothers to their babies.
“This special edition RED iPhone features a stunning red and black color combination and also offers customers the opportunity to make an impact in fighting the spread of HIV and AIDS,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of Product Marketing.
The company said it has donated more than US$160 million to the global fund since 2006.
