Nokia will officially be re-entering the smartphone market next year.
In its investor-focused presentation slides at the Capital Markets Day, the company confirmed that Nokia-branded smartphones will return in 2017. Although there are speculations that we could see at least two mobile devices being released before the end of the year.
Earlier this year, Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri stated that the company was "not in a hurry" as it was searching for suitable partners to handle the manufacturing and sales aspects. In May, Foxconn's subsidiary FIH Mobile signed an agreement with HMD Global to manufacture the phones. Three months later, HDM Global hired seven-year Nokia veteran and ex-CEO of Angry Birds maker Rovio, Pekka Rantala as the Chief Marketing Officer.
Nokia will be having a keynote at the Mobile World Congress 2017 where it is expected to be launching new Android-powered smartphones.
Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017 is at least four months away, but Nokia can't wait any longer to announce that it will have a keynote at the annual tech exhibition.
Announced via its Twitter account, Nokia confirmed that its President and CEO Rajeev Suri will be delivering a keynote at MWC 2017. While Nokia is said to be announcing at least two new mobile devices before the end of the year, a delay cannot be ruled out. In addition, Nokia may take the opportunity to launch a new lineup of smartphones at MWC 2017.
Earlier this year, Nokia announced its plans to start making phones and tablets again with the help of HMD Global and Foxconn. The company also revealed that its new mobile devices will be powered by Android.
