Help I'm confused about data plans?

  What is a data plan?They said that you need it for smartphones like iPhone and Blackberry for some reason,and do you get it if you buy an iPhone without contract?

  A data plan is mean you will be paying for data transmitted to and from your iphone. If you play a song on iphone through a web browser, it's worth about <3.5 MB data on 3G or FREE on wifi.

  If you buy an iphone without contract, you still can use the phone to surf internet, but it'll cost more expensive as reflected on bills as 3G data (for post-paid users without data plan). The 'data plan' is a discounted package for you so that you can surf internet on the go with much fear it burst your pocket.

  I am not too sure if pre-paid SIM can surf internet on iphone or not.... If you're is post-paid plan (without data plan), it's definitely going to be a huge bill if you do not have data plan.

  But I thought iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s have built-in wifi?In that case a data plan should be useless isn't it?

  If you surf internet at a place with WIFI, then it'll be free.  

  But if you surf internet on bus/ train/ public/ anywhere without WIFI, then they'll start charging you because they'll be transmitting data on 3G to you.

  That why sometimes you see this ah girl or that ah boy watching YouTube or updating Facebook status on iphone in train... they are paying for the data plan.  Actually data plan quite reasonable price, all the 3 telcos offering around same price.

  Yes, iphones have built-it wifi receiver

  wifi - is wireless internet connection. When you're at home, you may have wifi transmitted through the router from the modem.
