Where do i exactly go to purchase a satellite phone within singapore for civilian application uses(personal calls to family/school staff and friends).
I do know that singtel is one of the providers of satellite phones (thinking of getting an Iridium Phone due to coverage reasons), do i just simply go to any singtel Hello shop or do i have to go to their main office?
Would be helpful if you could provide me a price for prepaid services (won't mind PMs either), or explain briefly the process in which one has to go through to get a satellite phone within singapore.
Hope its not a restricted product(e.g. High/Low frequency radio waves scanners) within Singapore requiring sercurity clearances.
Would most likely use it overseas (Japan). I could get it there but my parents live here(could not being a s'porean be a problem?).
Why do you even want a satellite phone? These are more for mountain climbers and other people who have to work in remote, far-flung areas.
Do you even know what the calling rates are like? You're looking at USD0.15 to USD2.00 per minute.
bu nen yong hua wen. (even my hanyu pinyin screw up)
Yeah calling rates wise for 0.15-2.00 per minute is still ok(not like gonna call my gf(don't hav),most likely just for status/location updates).....(going prepaid)
Well experienced first hand what happens when natural disasters occur(which might happen soon again) (was studying in tokyo), all mobile phone networks were jammed/overloaded. Three word sentence took 5-6 hours to get through to my parents living(luckily i had moblie broadband to skype with) in singapore. Futhermore planning to cycle/camp into remote areas during the holidays.
Thanks for the fast replies people!!
unrelated question but:
has anyone seen a cover (both soft/hard case) for a dell streak 5?
(need to buy one as all i have is a screen film)
I like you have considered getting a satelite phone because of my jobscope, this site should give you a headstart.

If I remember, one of the companies listed do sell prepaid cards, and the per min rates are really astronomical. Then there is the hardware you need to get with it, think the bulky ones cost 800 bucks over, and the ones that look more decent cost over $1200.
So far I have not got one yet because surprisingly, singtel roaming is actually quite fantastic.
By the way, singtel only caters satelite services for large businesses, not personal consumption, so you can leave them out.

More of protection against external shock loads onto the frame/screen of my streak.
All it took for my dell streak to end up in a softbank dealer (still stuck in some shop in tokyo) with a badly cracked screen was a drop of 5-7cm by my mother onto a serving tray at a chinese restaurant
