Sony Ericsson strange location screen, GPS?

Ok. I have this old S.E phone and i stopped using it last year. During that time i found out it has this location thing on the screen, right under M1-GSM. It only works when i put in a M1 card and i am wondering why its there. For example, i go to city hall,and my phone will write " City Hall Mrt" . When at home,it says CCK BLK ***. Anyone can help me understand why ?
PS: There isnt any gps thing installed. just phone + sim. -

it's a service under your service provider. Totally free. Don worry. It's your sim card location.

It uses the tower to triangulate my position, unlike gps which is more accurate. -
The last time my friend had a 3G phone plan and we went to Mt Ophir... It told us the exact location...
