Rental lease agreement - Is it compulsory to sign???!!!

My family is being very emotionally abusive toward me so I have thought a lot about moving out of my house recently. I have a few questions about renting a room though.
For the renting lease agreement, I don't want to sign this agreement because I'm not sure how many months I will be able to commit.
I am afraid that I might suddenly back out from the rental lease and I will end up having lots of hassles from the landlord etc. If I suddenly back out from the rental lease agreement I am afraid that my landlord will bring me to the court.
Is it compulsory that I need to sign the renting lease agreement? And also, where other places can I go, other than renting? I need to get away from my emotionally abusive family, my self-esteem is deteoriating every day. -
There is no such thing as not wanting to sign a lease agreement. No prospective landlord would agree to that. Other options are almost nil here in this red dot, excepting student hostels or cheap hotels or lodging houses. Google for them and ....

u can request to add a clause that u can choose to terminate the agreement early if u do not want to continue staying
but of cos, maybe u have to compensate the landlord, like 1 more mth's rental
u can go to budget hotel, per by per night basis (if u are oni going to stay for a few days)
or serviced apartments, per 2 week or per mth basis. -
got relatives or friends that might b willing to help put u up whilst u try to sort things out?

The rental agreement need you to commit at least 3 months, if you back out before that , your one month deposit will be forfeited. Alternatively, there are rental per day like $20 in HDB flats. You can goggle for it on website. There are landlords willing to rent out room on a short term basis. But pay by day.

Hard cos landlords will be afraid of renting to illegal immigrants or fugitives. Day by day usually need to give a copy of your IC.
