If you put high hopes on something, the chances of disappointment are higher.
Even sales persons are foreigners....sigh! Where is the locals?
Why would there be locals, if locals shun such jobs?

People has been saying that foriengers take away their jobs.
Sales line is ok for the locals, unlike construction (building) or repair roads.

Sales line is ok, but how many locals want to do it? Pay you 1000 bucks a month, 12 hour shift, work on weekends, stand outside the restaurant and promote ramen/teppanyaki/soba, otherwise you'll be inside serving the occasional grouchy local customer, you want?
Sales attitude here is bloody terrible. If you're not buying, they change their faces. Terrible terrible. I will never step in there again.
I've been to HK shopping, their sales persons were terribly rude ! Singapore much better...
It's a china thing.
There's a shop in Orchard road that sell shoes, so one day I went there looking for working shoes....I requested to test a few brands and decided not to buy in the end, the sales person throwed the shoes at me and I nearly reported this to the police....later I found out that, that sales person had mental problems....anyway this was just a rare incident....overall SG sales people have better manners than HK ones....
they dont get my sale.
simple.

You pay them $5,000 a month, they will work for you 12 hour shifts and work on weekends.
Like what the people at the top always say: pay them well, and they will come.

Years ago before the FT became sales counter staff, customer already don't feel that they are getting the Service Smile. I encounter a PRC FT at Watson recently...she asked customer if she needed a carrier bad..somehow it seem the customer must have missed out the soft PRC English that she has ask the customer and walked away after paying....when I was the next paying customer...counter sales staff was jabbering about how impolite the customer was by not replying to her question about offering a carrier...It show how bad the attitue of the FT PRC to give back comment infront of me...I think she must have felt she has an Iron Ricebowl..if she need to feel frustrated about her job or clients..be smart enough to complain when no customer is around...I have sensitive ears...LOL

Right on, sometimes its the customers that are rude !
when you employ cheap peoples, the intention is to keep operating cost down so as to jack up profit further or that profit had not been good. So how on earth are you going to teach them about total customer satisfactory courses, so be it, cheap foreign talents, cheap bosses and cheap singaporeans

Cheap doesn't mean lack quality and expensive doesn't guarantee good service....I think the long working/standing hours of retail sales people made them a bit hot-tempered....
are you willing to work happily for $5/hr?
that is what most stores are offering for retail staff.

U are very understanding by making thes valid point
Some local customers can be damn bitchy and a pain in the ass. Which is why I am always polite and courteous towards sales staff. Unless of course they choose to be nasty

Sales people in those shops have to stand for long hours...pay are also not that good....but somebody have to do those jobs....better than jobless...
Everybody play both roles in their daily lives, the customer and the saleperson.
As a sale person, be it if you are upfront or back table sales, your jobs is to please the customers or so call delight the customers, then you get feedback, shout at, scream at , or complained at, part and parcel of everyone everyday lives, at the end of the day, you just want to earn a living, cannot tarhan also hv to tarhan.
As customer, you take on a different hat, you feel that after all the stress and hardwork in pleasing your customers, now you are being serve, you expect to be serve properly and nicely, more so is that you are spending your hard earn labour money, so your expectation of the sale person who serve you to be good and meet your needs, if not, you too will scream, shout, complain and do the same as your customer did to you.
This is how our customer and sale relation works.
