Dear all,
NUS currently has a research program that provides free psychotherapy services to people who are depressed and/or are traumatised.
Depression is characterised by an overwhelming sense of sadness, negative feelings about the self or others, guilt, low energy, loss of concentration, and a drastic change in sleep and eating patterns. PTSD (Post-traumatic Stress Disorder), a form of anxiety disorder, is precipitated by an extremely traumatic event like assault, crime, and accidents etc. People with PTSD may worry intensely and be unable to relax.
If you do not currently have substance dependence or a recent history of self-injurious behavior, and are between 21-85 years old, this program may be beneficial for you. There will be 8-10 therapy sessions with a psychologist, and clients will be reimbursed for their time and travel costs.
If you know of anyone who may benefit from this program, pls feel free to drop me a message and I can send you an e-brochure with more details.
Thank you and have a good day.
First and foremost, psychology was not even a proven science nor a medical condition.
Hi angel,
Perhaps psychology wasn't considered scientific before.. but it sure is now!
Psychology isn't a medical condition. It merely serves as the foundation to understand the various mental disorders that are present in our society these days, such as depression.
Regardless, people have benefited from psychotherapy, and we're hoping that more can benefit from this program! It seems affected people are always discouraged by the high costs involved, or don't really know which avenue to go to for support.
Hope that explains a little:)
Mental disorder is more toward the brain deterioration which can be due to certain events, genes, or simply old age. A neuron surgeon would had been better than a what so called psychologist which had no proven record of any healing i know of.
Would had been better if such funds taken be use on the study of neuron function.
To each his own, I guess. We all have varying experiences with different professionals.
This project is actually also tied to the scientific study of immunological functioning pre- and post- therapy by doctors involved. Healthcare is always a collaborative effort.
However, you're right to question the basis of psychotherapy. That is why studies are conducted to ascertain its effectiveness, by comparing variables pre- and post- therapy.
ya, maybe, different school of thots, it is only of last century that psychology come to light, i bet there had been so many research, studies and thesis make on psychology, in depression, people seek solaces in many ways, with their God, dearest ones, go away to some peaceful places, exercise or meditates, psychology just provide another avenue to address it.
I will rather advocate to study on what trigger depression or mental disorder, which is a more both proactive and pre emptive approach than addressing it. More like preventive measure by nibbing the illness on the bud before it become worst.
That's why we have positive psychology! :)
Ok, no need to shout lah. I respect it.
