Is there really a need for Apache??

Singapore is a tiny nation, and on top of that we are surrounded by nations which have bigger spending power. Not only that, we are surrounded by water, so why dont we expand our navy?? Why cant we invest in bigger warships rather than just have submarines, frigates and corvettes??? Atleast a flagship... Dont we have funds or a budget?? So much $$$ is pumped into the ARMY!!!! Your views please...

Singapore doesn't need bigger warships when Singapore has tiny territorial waters.

having Apache is definitely a wise choice, its armament can handle enemies in the air, land and sea. Flagship is for show, showing flags only, waste of moeny.

You even know what a "Flagship" is? It is a command center, not a ship class. Even a well equipped sampan can be a "flagship". As it is, our frigates are already configured as command centers, so they are our "flagships". Singapore may be surrounded by water, but as ditzy said, most of it isn't ours and we don't have the manpower for bigger ships. You do know that our Navy is already working on 50% manpower compared to other countries? Other countries frigate manpower is ~150, Singapore has to work with 71 men. Our "biggest" ship already on half manpower and you want bigger? This also runs into the Apache choice, a Squadron of 12 aircraft need only about 40 men to fly and maintain, much less than a ship and there is a specific threat for it to counter, as our dear neighbours have recently gotten MBTs.

Tigerkid, Navy only can patrol the sea, there is a lot of stuff which navy cannot do and areas that they cannot cover. No matter what - land war cannot be avoided. Apache is very effective in close-air support, and very effective in stopping any armour thrust .

land war , water war or air war, if war really break out, break out donkey years ago..

Tigerkid, correct that we are surrounded by water. But the overwater distance from Singapore to our closest neighbors is measured in tens of km only. We need a balance of large & small warships, the large ones such as Formidable class to protect the SLOCs which covers the larger expanse of sea and also smaller ships to cover the shallow seas surrounding Singapore and 100 to 500 km beyond our shores. The Apache are excellent CAS assets.
